Cross pollinating with new ideas from unexpected places…
Being a solitary freelancer it’s easy to sometimes slip into a cabin fever induced coma.
This often means that taking (or making!) the time to step outside of my immediate environment / routine / mindset / industry is an absolute necessity.
So, once a week I make a concerted effort to leave the comforts of my studio to explore…because awe inspiring ideas + solutions sometimes need to be triggered by external stimuli.
Often these outings sew the seeds that often inspire the diversification of my interests + activities, resulting not only in a healthy multitude of side projects but a fresher approach to existing projects. I am constantly struck by the vast amount of ideas out there that can be transported back to the studio to be explored and possibly, eventually, planted into my practice.
I’ve listed a few practical hints to get you going should you feel the need to take a moment and step outside:
- Instead of visiting your regular coffee shop, park, or shopping centre why not try exploring a bit further afield
- Make a list of 10 places you always intend on visiting but never do. And then visit them. This may mean simply playing tourist in your own town!
- Scour the local paper for interesting events you wouldn’t usually attend
- Peruse the magazine racks for obscure or unfamiliar titles – perhaps Equine Weekly will conjure up an exciting new idea..
- Flip through a course catalogue for your local adult education center. Perhaps a course may catch your eye…
Whatever your approach to escaping the potential hazards of cabin fever – here’s to always keeping one eye open (to explore) and one eye closed (to dream)!
